Scheduling Update

Due to my (Bobcat's) sister getting married soon, combined with the holiday season, we're going to let the anniversary special take the place of this week's review. To compensate, when we get to Tiger and Bunny around New Years, we're going to look at more episodes. Peace.

Five Point Podcast Episode 40: The World God... by fivepointpodcast
The World God Only Knows: It's The Last Starfighter, only with more Dating Sims and fewer clones and aliens.  It's also a premise that requires a master touch.  Does this show work or fall flat on its NERD face?  Guess you'll just have to watch.

Princess Tutu Review

Having two jobs sucks... anyway, a week late, here's Princess Tutu, featuring Paranormal Rob!  You should totally check out his website (, watch his vids and buy his swag.

In a world where the barrier between reality and fiction, one girl must save the day with ballet.  She fights anteaters, gravity and delusional restaraunteurs, while trying to start a relationship with an emotionless boy who already has an abusive boyfriend.  Also the girl is a duck.

I am not making this up.  To learn more, you'll just have to watch.

A Post Unrelated to Anime: Patchwork Ties

Friend of the show C. L. Collins has recently published a fantasy e-book called Patchwork Ties.  You should check it out.  He's a cool dude and he writes good stories.  Here's the summary from the website:

When Celine Young encountered the bizarre man looking for a wooden sword, she expected an adventure. She didn't expect what it entailed, or that he would talk so much...

Opinionated Young Justice Review Pilot

This is a video that I (Bobcat) made about a month ago. It was the prototype for a review series about the Young Justice cartoon that I haven't had the time to work on. My biggest issue is a general lack of experience with video editing, and fear of copyright violations that would be involved in using the footage from the show, resulting in issues with using still frames from the show.

With that glowing recommendation, enjoy!

Also, apologies for the slightly wonky audio on my (Bobcat's) end.  I figured out what I was doing wrong only after the recording was all done.

Policy and Scheduling Change Announcements

Hitler finds out the Five Point Podcast is... by fivepointpodcast

The videos should explain sufficiently what we're doing. To sum it up,

1) We're switching from doing the podcast weekly to every other week (biweekly). With work and real life, we don't have time to devote every single weekend to the podcast anymore.

2) We're closing requests. We have too many at this point, and it's only fair to the people who have already made requests that we don't drown them out under new requests. If we get through the list, we'll reopen them at some point.

That's all. If there are any questions or comments, leave them below.

The Legend of Korra Season 1 Review

A month in the making. Five combined hours recording between the two attempts at recording.  More than eight hours of editing.  Four hours of uploads.  One review.
It is... an epic length review of the Legend of Korra, the followup to the popular Avatar: The Last Airbender. How does it work out? ... we aren't fans.

If you'll excuse me, I'm just going to go over there and faint.

Also, play the drinking game at home: every time we say, "In a better written show," take a shot.

Gun X Sword Review

Firstly, some apologies for the wonky audio. There were issues with the recording that weren't noticed until too late.

Scheduling Update Update

No update this week. We'll be pushing back Legend of Korra to this weekend. It's all recorded, but it'll be a long one, and I've had no time to edit. Apologies all around, but I think 7 months with no missed updates entitles us to the occasional mulligan.

Scheduling Update

Here's the deal: in honor of Bree's birthday (she requested the Gravitation review back in the day), we moved up our Legend of Korra review to this week. We also brought back Tom (from our Moribito review). 009-1 Review

This week, we look at 009-1, a series that, much to our surprise, is mostly unrelated to the classic Cyborg 009. In a world where the Cold War never ended, one cyborg woman must use the powers of lasers and seduction (not in that order) to save... democracy?
Featuring guest star Jakale, who won our 10,000th viewer contest back in June.

Black Lagoon Review

All good things must come to an end, and so we close out Paint It Black month with a DOUBLE request; yes, when we mentioned we were doing Paint It Black month, we got a request from Runixzan and Paranormal Rob, and Yerocha also mentioned being surprised we hadn't included it in the initial list. With that much hype, and the fact that it's about modern day pirates, this has to be good, right? Right?

Edit: In the video, I call requester Runixzan a woman.  He is not.  I'm not sure why I thought what I thought; I am so sorry for that.

Black Jack Review

Paint It Black Month moves ahead full steam after last week's debacle!

He's baaaaack. That's right, Yerocha is guest starring again to review the anime Black Jack, based on the classic manga by Osamu Tezuka. Was this series in good health or on life support? Listen to find out!

Note: in the podcast, I say that we have a commercial break in the middle that you can go to to avoid too many spoilers.  If you can't see the break (a black dot in the progress bar), the spoilers end at time stamp 30:10.

Paint It Black Addendum

So, it came to my attention, looking at a calendar, that there's an extra week of Paint It Black month that I failed to take into account.

See, here's the deal.  We haven't updated on Sundays for a long time.  We officially do, but it's a legal fiction, more or less.  We update on Fridays or Saturdays these days, since we figure we want people to have the time to listen over the weekend.  Sunday is sort of the absolute last minute we post anything, if schedules went horribly awry, and we haven't had anything come out later than Saturday since March.

Yet, for scheduling, I still say it's Sunday, to give us that wiggle room.  But that means that in terms of our REAL schedule, there's one more Friday and Saturday in June that has to be filled, and it might as well be for the theme month.

too long, didn't read version: I goofed on basic calendar reading skills.

So, Paint It Black Month will now end on Black Lagoon, requested by Runixzan. (

The Last YouTube Commercials

After some soul searching, we've decided to discontinue these YouTube commercials. We don't get much traffic from YouTube anymore and we don't get a lot of hits on these videos. From now on, we'll be doing short samples of the podcasts on YouTube to try and lure people in. However, I feel like we're ending on one of our strongest gags, which we did for Black Blood Brothers.

Black Blood Brothers Review

In Black Blood Brothers, we see what happens when a writer creates a series using the Mad Lib Method.  I've used it myself.  Is Black Blood Brothers better than that time I wrote the story about Butthead, the legendary roadkill warrior who had to rescue his iguana Steve from the evil Green Party Zombies?  You'll just have to watch the review to find out.

Hey guys, I just heard that Toonami's back!

Much to my shock, the new Toonami includes Casshern Sins.  I must say that I was honestly shocked when I saw it on the list, given how grim and, frankly, weird it is.

Hm... it seems to me some clever and handsome reviewers did a review of Casshern a few months back, with the help of a certain manga blogger guest star... (wink wink)

If you missed it the first time around, it's not too late!  See what all the fuss is about!

Announcement: Paint It Black Month

This June, the Five Point Podcast will review four shows. What do they have in common? By amazing coincidence, the word Black is in all of their titles. Hey, I've heard of flimsier justifications for a theme month.

Enjoy as we cover the well known, the obscure and one bizarre show based on the work of... ROGER CORMAN. There will be...

Child Abuse!
And more!
The Schedule:

6/3: Black Blood Brothers (Request from Angel of the Wolf)
6/10: Black Heaven (Request from Angel of the Wolf)
6/17: Black Scorpion (Request from Legendmaker) (Guest star Legendmaker)
6/24: Black Jack (Guest star Yerocha)

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit Review

This week, special guest star Space Wizard Tom comes on to discuss Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. In an Asian flavored fantasy world, a spear maiden must protect a young prince marked for death. So was it great, or more the anime equivalent of a video game escort mission? Psht, like we're going to tell you in the description. Watch the video, silly.

The Least Popular Reviews

As I go over the statistics, I realize that (gasp) people are more interested in some series than they are in others.  This saddens me, since some of the more neglected reviews are also some of my favorites.  So, in an attempt to convince you (the listeners at home) to give these reviews a second shot, here are the five reviews that were the least listened to (taking into account how long they've been up on the site), in order from most to least:

1. Origin: Spirits of the Past
2. Heroman
3. Getter Robo
4. Time of Eve
5. Asura Cryin'

This leads me to ask why some of these are overlooked.  We've attempted to do a mix of the obscure and the popular, and it seems like popular series are the most listened to.  Why is there less demand for obscure titles?  I would personally expect there to be more demand for the obscure, since that's where a review would be really helpful in guiding you towards something you've never heard of before.  We'd be interested in what everyone out there had to say on the topic.

Bobcat's Recommended Reviews

I've recently gone back and listened to a few of the old podcasts and I realized something: we are really self referential.  That is to say, we have in jokes and we compare characters to characters in other works we've reviewed without a lot of explanations.  This is a bit daunting for new viewers, I realize.  So, in the interest of helping new visitors out, here's my list of reviews that we refer to the most.  If you listen to no other old podcast episodes, these five ought to help you make sense of new ones.

Baka and Test First review, first use of the character description "Pink Haired Girl."
Tales From Earthsea Our first movie, and one we often refer back to when it comes to nonsensical plot twists.
Origin: Spirits of the Past Our second movie, which we refer to when it comes to dumb protagonists and villains who are the real heroess.
Misfits Our April Fools episode, which made Super Rape a power.  Possibly the worst thing we've reviewed yet.
Mobile Suit Gundam We like to make fun of the main character, Amuro, by saying his name strangely.

Apocalypse Zero Review

We've had series recommended to us for a number of reasons. This is the first that was specifically asked of us because of how bad it was. Thanks a lot, SpacemanHardy. On the plus side, it gave us an excuse to bring in reinforcements, in the form of Paranormal Rob.

Happy Birthday, Burkion! As a gift to himself, Burkion chose the harem anime Rosario + Vampire. The question is... why would he do a fool thing like that?

Poll Results- YouTube Videos

A few weeks back, we posted a poll. You see, initially, a lot of the traffic we got here was through our YouTube page. The way we'd try to attract viewers was via silly little 30 second commercials. However, for whatever reason (I suspect my friend Hika's viewers aren't interested in our videos anymore, and she's nice enough to give them a "Like" every time), traffic from them is way down. With such a small number of views, we decided to ask if people still enjoyed them and if they were worth the time and effort. The results: out of 16 votes, we got the following responses.

8: Yes. They're amusing.

5: No. Quit while you're ahead.

3: I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

Since the yays outweigh the nays, we'll keep making them. Thanks to everyone who voted.

Mobile Suit Gundam Review

Mecha Month continues full steam ahead! We're hot blooded and raring for action! We believe in ourselves, who believe in ourselves! This meme doesn't work for more than one person!

Four score and eight years after humanity has gone to the stars! A ragtag crew of Earthlings must fight off a group of colonists gone rogue. Their only hope is a young boy named Amero and his giant robot, the prototype Gundam. How did we treat this venerable series that launched quite possibly the greatest anime franchise ever? As well as we treat anything.

Mecha Month! Schedule Update 3/28/12

Firstly, we're happy to announce (formally) that April will be Mecha Month.  We'll be looking at a mostly older shows, with one more contemporary show to keep us from getting HOT BLOODED 70S AND 80S MECHA ANIME poisoning.

And yes, that's a thing.  And yes, I had to post that in all caps.  The hot bloodedness made me.

Our April schedule is:

4/1: Neon Genesis Evangelion (Mecha Month)
4/8: Beast King Go Lion (Mecha Month)
4/15: Mobile Suit Gundam (Mecha Month)
4/22: Getter Robo G (Mecha Month)
4.29: Asura Cryin' (Mecha Month)

Now for some housekeeping.

It's been about two months since the last time we did a post on schedule updates; we've managed to get through most of the anime we'd had on the docket at the time.  What inspired this post is an e-mail from one "Angel of the Wolf," who made a whole bunch of requests all at once.  Beyond April, the schedule gets hazy, and we'd like you, the viewers, to tell us which shows you'd like to see us take on.

Angel Tales (Request from Angel of the Wolf)
Avatar: The Legend of Korra (Request from Angel of the Wolf) (obviously, we need to wait until there are three episodes to review.)
Bartender (Request from Angel of the Wolf)
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (Request from Angel of the Wolf)
Black Blood Brothers(Request from Angel of the Wolf)
Black Heaven (Request from Angel of the Wolf)
Black Scorpion (Request from Legendmaker)
Chi's Sweet Home (Request from Angel of the Wolf)
Guilty Crown (Request from Runixzan)
Gun Frontier (Request from Angel of the Wolf)
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit  (No matter what, this one is getting done in May.)
Princess Tutu (Request by SpacemanHardy)
Samurai Girl: Real Bout High School (Request by Sloth)
The World God Only Knows (Request by Yerocha)
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (this one will have to wait until it's available to stream somewhere, or we get physical copies of the DVD.  It's just on our long range "to do" list.)
Also, since there's been some confusion: we don't review hentai.  Sorry, it's just outside our comfort zones.
If you listeners at home have a request of your own, or you just want to chime in on which of these you'd like to see us do sooner, you can comment below or e-mail us at

Rules Changes-Requests

In the past, we always said that we'd immediately dump whatever we were currently reviewing in favor of requests.  However, that was before we started having a firm plan for our reviews a month or more in advance.  In light of that, from here on out, review requests will be done in a timely manner, but will not NECESSARILY knock our schedule out of whack.  Mainly, I'm covering my butt so we don't have to mess with April's Mecha Month.

However, on the flip side: in the past, we've also said to shoot for the obscure.  However, go ahead and request your heart out.  Even if we have prior exposure, we'll give it a shot.

Coyote Ragtime Show Review

This time, we went into a show blind. We knew nothing about it, we knew nothing about the popular opinion of it, we didn't even know its genre. But we knew one thing:

It had one of the greatest titles ever.

It also had one of the worst titles ever.

Friday Randomness #2

It's that time again.  Time to help everyone get their weekend started on a random note.

It was Burk's choice this week.  I'm not sure what you all did to make him want to do this to you, but you should probably apologize.

AMV of the Week #1

This is another new feature we're introducing.  There are many fine Anime Music Videos out there, many of which don't get the attention they deserve.  We're going to do our best to fix that situation.  After this week, we'll be posting these on Tuesday; since the actual review was posted later than normal, I don't want to step on its toes.

Video after the break.

Heroman Review

With apologies for the delay, here's our review of Heroman.

As a birthday present to himself, Bobcat selected the topic of this review, Heroman. Why? Because it was created by one of Bobcat's personal heroes, Stan Lee! Is this the anime Spider-Man, the anime Nightcat or, God help us, the anime Striperella? Watch to find out!

Episode Delay

Hello, everyone.  Happy Birthday to me (Bobcat).  Unfortunately, due to birthday festivities and the like, the episode will be coming out a little late.  How late?  I'm not sure; it depends on how much fun I have tonight.  At the latest, the new review will be up tomorrow.

Friday Randomness #1

I've decided to introduce a new feature around here. Every week, Burkion or myself will choose the most random online vid we've seen all week and post them here for your enjoyment. They won't always be anime related, they won't always be in good taste and they won't always be, y'know, GOOD... but they will supply 50% of your FDA daily recommended dose of random. Video after the break.

And yes, I'm aware this was in fact posted really late Thursday.  Hey, it's Friday somewhere, right?

Conglomerated Commercial Video 2- The Revenge

It's that time again!  Time for us to combine our last few YouTube commercials for the enjoyment of people who want to see them again, or for the enjoyment of people who found us through different methods and haven't seen them before.

What I'm saying is, enjoyment is mandatory.  Enjoyment will be enforced by canings!

Episode 10: Fate/Stay Night

Woohoo! Ten episodes! And you all thought we'd collapse after a month. Well, we showed you!

... ahem.

In this episode, Bobcat and Burkion look at Fate/Stay Night at the request of Bobcat's friend Thanqol. In a world like our own, teen magicians battle one another for the fate of the world. Also, it's a show that eerily resembles a dating sim that cleaned itself up after a stint in rehab.

Website Update

I decided to rework the website some to make it easier to separate the ads from the navigation tools. Let me know if you like it, love it, hate it, have no strong opinion, etc.

Casshern Sins Review- Featuring Yerocha

Because you demanded it! A crossover between the Five Point Podcast and Yerocha's Shades of Grey manga review! Be sure to check out his website at

In this episode, Bobcat, Burkion and Yerocha tackle Casshern sins. Set in a post apocalyptic future, one amnesiac man must try to figure out why armies of robots want to eat him. Was the series in working order, or did it need a quick tune up?

Spice and Wolf Review

In the eighth episode of the Five Point Podcast, Bobcat and Burkion delve into the popular series Spice and Wolf. How much will they love a show about medieval merchants?
Well, there's only one way to find out! ... but since they keep their phone numbers private, the next best option is to watch the episode.

Origin: Spirits of the Past Review

This week, Bobcat and Burkion look at Origin: Spirits of the Past, a requested review from friend of the show Flaktrap.
In a post apocalyptic future, it's technology versus a biological hivemind for the future of the planet. Only one unlikely hero, chosen as the representative of the hivemind, can defeat the coming technological genocide.
... I know what you're thinking, but this came out years before Avatar.

Schedule Update

Since I posted about the last requested review, we've had another review request.  So, here's our schedule for the next few weeks (assuming we can keep up our weekly update schedule, knock on wood.)

(Actual schedule after the break).

Origin: Spirits of the Past Announcement

We're proud to announce that next time we'll be reviewing the anime movie Origin: Spirits of the Past.  This is a request from friend of the show Flaktrap.

Squid Girl Review

In this episode, Bobcat and Burkion look at the show Squid Girl (also known as Invasion Squid Girl, depending on which localization you look at). Squid Girl is the story of a young girl with a squid on her head and her goal of subjugating the human race. Did we have a taste for calamari, or did we toss it back?

If you'd like to watch the show for yourself, you can watch it for free at Crunchyroll:

Conglomerated Commercial Video

We used to do YouTube commercials. This is the first part of the collection, posted because they're pretty amusing in the opinion of me, Bobcat, the one who made them. Totally not biased. Nope. Not at all.

Gravitation Review

In this episode, Bobcat and Burkion tackle a shounen ai show. Gravitation is the story of two young men trying to make it in the cutthroat world of J-Pop, and the budding (?) romance between one of the band members and an emotionally distant and abusive novelist. Did this series draw us in, or did it plummet to Earth at a rate of 9.8 meters per second squared?

Tales From Earthsea Review

Oh boy! A studio Ghibli movie based on the famous and beloved Earthsea fantasy series. Is this meeting of two great things like chocolate and peanut butter, or chocolate with battery acid?
... well, the fact that it got a mere 46% on Rotten Tomatoes and won two Japanese Raspberry Awards for Worst Director and Worst Movie should give you some idea. How did such a great combination go so wrong? Watch to find out!

Tales From Earthsea Review Announcement

Now that we've actually watched it and the capricious schedule of Netflix can't stop our review, we're proud to announce that our next review (which should be up sometime tomorrow) is of the studio Ghibli film "Tales From Earthsea."  Hopefully we'll be able to get to Ponyo at some point in the future.

Remember, if there's a series you'd like us to review, you can comment below or email us at

Heat Guy J Review

Hi everyone.  After nearly a month (I can't believe it was that long), Burkion and I return with our review of Heat Guy J, from the creator of The Vision of Escaflowne. Did we like it, or were we left cold?

Also, a quick update on the schedule.  Although we said at the end of the video that our next review would be Ponyo, Netflix took it down from its streaming list.  Don't worry, we'll find something else to review from Studio Ghibli (I'd say what it was, but I don't want to jinx us; this is the second time that something I'd been working on was torpedoed because Netflix picked the wrong week to take something down).

Good News Everyone!

My laptop is back!  You should see some more life around here soon.

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

A Quick Explanation

As you may have noticed, we didn't update for Christmas, Boxing Day or New Years.  This is because I (Bobcat) had some technical problems.  The hard drive for my laptop died at 12:15 on Christmas Night (thus ruining Boxing Day, but not Christmas).  It's currently over at Dell (hooray for warranties), and new episode production is stalled until it comes back, which will hopefully be soon.  Sorry for the delays and I hope everyone had a good holiday season.
